Before the Mirror
Édouard Manet, 1876
What you see
A woman with blond hair pinned up turns her back to us and leans toward a tall mirror with a dark, gilded frame. Her shoulders are bare; she wears a blue corset and a white skirt, and her right arm hangs toward the lower corner. Her pale back, at the center, is the brightest area. On the right hangs a blue and white curtain.
Everything is painted in long, visible strokes of blue, white and touches of pink. The skin is built up in layers of warm white, the corset in deeper blue strokes. The hair is a mass of golds and greens. Seek out the gilt finial on the mirror, to the right of her head.
About Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
