The Café-Concert
Édouard Manet, c. 1879
What you see
A white-bearded man in a top hat fills the center, seated at a marble table with one hand on its edge, gazing off to the right. In the lower left corner, a young woman with dark hair rests her arm beside a beer mug. Behind them, a waitress in a gray apron drinks from a glass.
Blacks and browns dominate, cut through by the white of his collar and the golden glints of the beer. The brushwork is loose, especially in the hands and background. Look in the upper left for the pale figure of a woman in profile beneath some lights, and for the light blue handkerchief on the table.
About Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
