Young man in a light jacket and black bow tie leaning toward a woman in brown at an outdoor restaurant table

Chez le père Lathuille

Édouard Manet, 1879

What you see

On a restaurant terrace, a young man in a light jacket and black bow tie leans toward the woman beside him, his arm along the back of her chair. She is seen in profile, dressed in brown with a white collar and a dark hat. A glass of wine stands on the tablecloth. In the background, among trees, a waiter in a white apron looks on.

Sunlight floods everything: the tablecloth and the gravel are almost white, and the foliage is made of green, red and yellow patches. The woman’s dress, by contrast, is built from dark, lively strokes. Look for her black lace gloves on the table.

About Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
