Golden bun topped with a white rose on a white napkin, with peaches, grapes, plums and a red box

The Brioche

Édouard Manet, 1870

What you see

On a wooden table with gilded ornaments, a brioche sits on a white fringed napkin, a white rose rising from its top. On the right are several peaches and a bunch of green grapes; on the left, a round red box and a dish of plums. A small knife lies diagonally across the napkin and leads the eye to the grapes.

The background is nearly black, which makes the white napkin and the rosy peaches glow. The cloth is painted in broad strokes that show the movement of the brush. Look for the blue ribbon beside the red box and for the gilt bronze ornaments on the front of the table.

About Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
