Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe
Édouard Manet, 1863
What you see
In a forest clearing, three people sit on the grass. On the left, a nude woman rests her chin on her hand and looks out at us. Beside her, two men in dark suits are talking; the one on the right, in a tasseled cap, gestures with an open hand. Farther back, a woman in a light shift bends over a stream, closing a triangle that leads the eye into the distance.
The dark greens of the woods are loosely painted, and the foreground figures are lit flatly. At lower left lies a still life: a blue dress, a straw hat, an overturned basket of fruit and a round loaf. Seek out the small bird flying near the top center.
About Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
