The Monet Family in Their Garden at Argenteuil

Édouard Manet, 1874

What you see

In a garden, Camille, in a white dress and hat, sits on the grass beneath a tree, while Jean, in a blue suit and straw hat, lies stretched out beside her. On the left, Monet, in a blue shirt, bends toward some flowers next to a watering can. At lower left, a rooster, a hen and a chick wander by.

Greens laid down in long, quick strokes fill almost the whole canvas. The white dress is shaded with grays and lilacs and spreads like a pale patch across the grass. In the distance, red dots mark the flowers. Watch for the red fan beside Camille and for the signature “manet” at lower right.

About Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
