A Bar at the Folies-Bergère
Édouard Manet, 1882
What you see
A barmaid with a blond fringe stands at the center, facing us, her hands resting on the marble counter. She wears a dark lace-trimmed bodice with a spray of flowers at the neckline. Behind her opens a vast hall, with a balcony packed with people and glowing chandeliers. On the right, a woman with the same hairstyle, seen from behind, talks to a man in a top hat.
The blacks of her dress stand out against the silvery grays of the background, where the crowd is made of quick dabs. In the foreground, champagne bottles, oranges in a glass bowl and two roses in a glass all gleam. Look in the upper left corner for a pair of feet in green boots on a trapeze.
About Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
