Woman in a gray dress seated on a dark bench while a bearded man leans on its back behind her, among plants

In the Conservatory

Édouard Manet, 1878–1879

What you see

A woman in a gray dress, yellow hat and matching gloves sits on a bench, a closed parasol across her lap. She gazes off to the left, lost in thought. Behind her, a man with a long beard and black coat leans on the backrest, a cigar between his fingers, looking down at her. The slats of the bench keep the two apart.

The background is a wall of intense greens with almost no depth, dotted with a few pink blossoms. The silvery gray of the dress is laid down in long strokes that follow the folds of the skirt. Seek out the blue and white porcelain urn on the left and, beside it, the artist’s signature written on a flowerpot.

About Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
