Woman Reading
Édouard Manet, 1880–1882
What you see
A young woman in a black hat, dark coat and fluffy gray scarf holds a very large illustrated paper in her gloved hands. The paper fills most of the left half, while her face, with pink cheeks and red lips, appears on the right, eyes on the page. Behind her is green foliage dotted with red, and a beer mug stands at lower left.
The blacks of the hat and coat frame her pale face, while the background is made of loose patches of green, red and blue. Gray pictures can barely be made out on the paper. Look for the wooden knob that holds it, at the upper left, and for the signature “manet” in the lower left corner.
About Édouard Manet
Édouard Manet painted modern life in Paris: cafés, streets and people of his time, with flat colours and bold brushwork. Some of his paintings caused scandals, but they inspired the young Impressionists, who saw him as their leader. Today he is seen as a bridge between classical painting and modern art.
