Valley between hills with a calm river, a house among trees, grazing sheep and a wide sky of glowing clouds

Valley Pasture

Robert S. Duncanson, 1857

What you see

Rounded hills close the valley on both sides and part in the middle toward bluish mountains. A still river enters from the left, where a pale house peeks out from the trees and two tiny figures stand by what looks like a boat. On the right, a flock of sheep grazes near a lone tree, and flat rocks rest in the foreground.

The sky fills nearly the upper half and is the brightest part of the picture: golden and gray clouds let through a hidden sun at upper right. Below, the land turns to ochres and muted greens. Look for the few dark cows among the white sheep, and the pale reflection of the sky in the river.

About Robert S. Duncanson

Robert Duncanson was born free in New York State and built his career in Cincinnati, becoming the best-known African American painter in the United States around the time of the Civil War. Backed by abolitionist patrons, he painted serene landscapes in the manner of the Hudson River School, travelled to Italy and Scotland, and spent part of the war in Canada. He was one of the first African American artists to win international acclaim, and in 2021 his “Landscape with Rainbow” was displayed at the Capitol for the presidential inauguration.
