Broad valley with a stream and small cascades in front, dark trees at the sides and a blue mountain in the distance

Landscape with Shepherd

Robert S. Duncanson, 1852

What you see

A huge dark tree frames the left side, and beside it stands a broken, crownless trunk. Below, a stream tumbles in small cascades between rocks. Behind, the valley stretches out in woods and meadows to a long bluish mountain on the horizon. In the central meadow you can pick out a flock of white sheep and, to the right, the tiny figure of the shepherd.

The tones are warm and earthy, browns, russets and dark greens, against a pale blue sky with pinkish clouds on the right. Light falls on the valley while the foreground stays in shadow. Watch for the white water of the cascades and the reddish cliffs in the middle distance.

About Robert S. Duncanson

Robert Duncanson was born free in New York State and built his career in Cincinnati, becoming the best-known African American painter in the United States around the time of the Civil War. Backed by abolitionist patrons, he painted serene landscapes in the manner of the Hudson River School, travelled to Italy and Scotland, and spent part of the war in Canada. He was one of the first African American artists to win international acclaim, and in 2021 his “Landscape with Rainbow” was displayed at the Capitol for the presidential inauguration.
