Mountain valley with a river running over stones, a lake beyond and two tall trees on the left

Scottish Landscape

Robert S. Duncanson, 1871

What you see

Two tall, pale-trunked trees fill the left side and open onto a deep valley. A river runs toward us in small falls between stones, then widens into a lake farther back. A round-topped mountain rises behind, with fainter peaks beyond, while crags close the view on the right. A lone tree stands right at the center.

The palette is warm and muted: browns, ochres and scrubby greens below, and a sky of pink and golden clouds above. Haze softens the mountains as they recede. Follow the white water of the river from the bottom edge up to the lake, and notice the rosy tone on the central slope.

About Robert S. Duncanson

Robert Duncanson was born free in New York State and built his career in Cincinnati, becoming the best-known African American painter in the United States around the time of the Civil War. Backed by abolitionist patrons, he painted serene landscapes in the manner of the Hudson River School, travelled to Italy and Scotland, and spent part of the war in Canada. He was one of the first African American artists to win international acclaim, and in 2021 his “Landscape with Rainbow” was displayed at the Capitol for the presidential inauguration.
