Woman at a Window
Caspar David Friedrich, 1822
What you see
A woman in a long dress, her hair pinned up, stands with her back to us at the very center of an almost empty room. She leans toward the lower part of a window whose shutter is open. Outside we see a mast with its rigging, tall slender trees in the distance and a pale sky. The walls, floor and window frame enclose her like a stage set.
The interior is brown and olive green, in half-light; the only light comes from outside, catching her shoulders and the edge of the window. Her dress glints with green, gold and reddish tones. Don’t miss the two small bottles on the sill to the right and the shadow her feet cast on the floorboards.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
