Monastery Graveyard in the Snow
Caspar David Friedrich, 1817–1819
What you see
At the center stand the ruins of a Gothic church: only tall pointed windows and a doorway remain. Two huge, leafless oaks flank it, and other twisted trees surround it. A line of monks dressed in black climbs a few steps toward the entrance. In the snow of the foreground stand wooden crosses and tilted gravestones.
In this image, browns, grays and the white of the snow dominate under a cold, cloudy sky. The bare branches spread like nets and echo the pointed shapes of the arches. Spot the freshly dug hole on the right, with planks and spades, and the figures already passing through the doorway.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
