Ruin of Eldena in the Riesengebirge
Caspar David Friedrich, c. 1830–1834
What you see
The sky fills the upper half. Below it, a range of bluish mountains runs from side to side, and in front of it, rising from a dark wood, stand the ruins: a tall arch and a pointed fragment of wall. Closer in, on a shadowy plain, there is a small cottage with a figure and a horse, and on the right a pool of water gleams.
Bands of gray and bluish cloud alternate with bright yellows, and that light contrasts with the land, which lies almost in shadow. The tones step down from yellow to blue and from blue to dark brown. Don’t miss the small building on the hill to the left and the animal grazing to the right of the cottage.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
