The Chasseur in the Forest
Caspar David Friedrich, 1814
What you see
A dense forest of firs fills almost the whole canvas like a dark wall. Below, a snowy clearing narrows toward the center, and there, very small, a soldier in a green cloak stands with his back to us, facing the trees. In the foreground, a black raven perches on a cut stump.
Dark greens and browns dominate; snow covers the ground and dusts the branches of the young firs on either side. At the foot of the trunks, behind the soldier, glows a reddish light. Spot the little fir growing beside the stump and the strip of gray sky barely showing at the top.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
