Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
Caspar David Friedrich, c. 1818
What you see
A man in a dark green coat, his hair tousled by the wind, stands on a rocky summit at the very center of the picture. Before him spreads a sea of fog, with ridges of rock and trees breaking through. Mountains rise in the distance, the tallest on the left. His figure splits the landscape into two almost equal halves.
The foreground is dark and heavy; everything beyond turns bluish gray, white and pale yellow as it recedes. The fog is painted in soft layers without hard edges, hiding and revealing the rocks at once. Watch for the walking stick in his left hand and the small treetops on the crag to the right.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
