The Great Enclosure near Dresden
Caspar David Friedrich, 1832
What you see
The horizon sits low, and the sky takes up more than half the picture. Across the middle band, clusters of dark, rounded trees line up from left to right, with a gentle hill in the distance. In the foreground, the ground is threaded with channels and pools that branch out toward us between patches of grass and mud.
At the top, the sky is pale lilac; lower down it turns yellow and orange, crossed by thin bluish clouds. The water on the ground echoes those colors. The paint is smooth, with no visible brushstrokes. Spot the small boat with a white sail, almost hidden at the center among the trees.
About Caspar David Friedrich
Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
