Morning Mist in the Mountains

Caspar David Friedrich, 1808

What you see

A slope climbs diagonally from the lower left corner to a summit of jagged rocks just above the center. A few trees grow on the rocks, and fir trees are scattered farther down. Everything else, on both sides and above, is wrapped in mist that blurs the mountain’s edges and leaves only its silhouette.

Nearly everything is gray, white and lilac, with muted greens in the trees. Light arrives from the upper right and warms the summit rocks. The mist is built up in soft, veiled layers. Don’t miss the dark firs at the center, sharper than the rest, and the small trees on the highest rock.

About Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich painted landscapes that invite you to dream: mountains in the mist, frozen seas and moons over the forest. His figures often appear from behind, gazing at nature, so that we look along with them. He walked for hours drawing trees, rocks and clouds.
