Venus of Urbino
Titian, 1534
What you see
Venus lies along the length of the bed, from left to right, her head on pillows and her gaze directed straight at us. Nude, she rests one hand in her lap and holds a few roses in the other. A small dog sleeps curled up at her feet. A dark curtain splits the picture in two: behind it, in a room with a checkered floor, two women go about their tasks near a window.
Pale skin and white sheets glow against the nearly black green curtain and the red mattress. In the background, the red dress of one of the women echoes the bed. Look for Venus’s bracelet and the potted plant on the windowsill, set against a sunset sky.
About Titian
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
