La Bella
Titian, 1536
What you see
A young woman, seen half-length, faces us calmly with the hint of a smile. Her chestnut hair is pinned up in braids coiled over her head, with a few loose curls at her temples. A long, fine gold chain hangs from her neck down to the bodice. A white veil falls over her right shoulder, on the left side of the picture.
The blue-green gown is embroidered with gold leaves and lines, and the sleeves open into wine-colored bands. The neckline has a soft white edge. The dark brown background makes her skin seem to glow. Look for the drop-shaped pearl earrings and the braid that falls behind her neck.
About Titian
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
