The Entombment of Christ
Titian, c. 1520
What you see
Three men carry the body of Christ, wrapped in a white sheet that crosses the picture from side to side. The man on the left, seen from behind in dark clothes, holds the legs; the one on the right, in a red cloak, bends under the weight of the torso; a young man in red at the center grips an arm. On the left, a woman in a blue mantle leans on another with long hair.
The red cloaks and the blue mantle glow against a sky of gray clouds, while the right side sinks into darkness. The sheet is the brightest area and guides the eye. Look for the arm hanging limply toward the ground on the right, and the stone edge of the tomb below.
About Titian
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
