Eleonora Gonzaga, Duchess of Urbino
Titian, 1536–1538
What you see
Eleonora Gonzaga sits turned slightly to the left, looking toward us, her hands resting on her chair. She wears black velvet with puffed sleeves trimmed in gold bows, and an embroidered cap. On the left, by a window that opens onto hills, a table covered in green holds a sleeping little dog and a small clock.
The black of the gown fills most of the picture and makes the white lace and the glints of gold stand out. The window adds a breath of blue and green. Seek out the cord hanging from her waist with a gold ornament, and the tiny figure crowning the clock.
About Titian
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
