Sacred and Profane Love

Titian, c. 1514

What you see

Two women who look much alike sit at either end of a carved stone fountain set in a landscape. The one on the left wears a shimmering white gown and gloves and rests her hand on a closed vessel. The one on the right is nearly nude, with a white cloth at her hips and a red cloak, and holds a small vessel aloft. Between them, a child leans over the water.

Behind the clothed woman, a castle rises on a hill; behind the other, a lake and a village with a bell tower. The red of the cloak and of one sleeve stands out among greens and golds. Seek out the reliefs on the fountain, including a horse, and the rose petals scattered along its edge.

About Titian

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
