Flora
Titian, c. 1515–1517
What you see
A young woman appears half-length against a dark background, her face turned to the left. Her auburn hair falls in waves over her shoulders. The loose white chemise slips from one shoulder, and with her left hand she holds a pink mantle against her chest. In her other hand, at lower left, a few flowers peek out among green leaves.
The whole picture plays with three colors: the white of the fabric, the copper of the hair and the pink of the mantle, which has the sheen of patterned silk. The skin is modeled with very soft shadows and no hard outlines. Look for the fine folds of the sleeve and the spread fingers of the hand holding the mantle.
About Titian
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was the great painter of Venice and worked for more than seventy years. He was a magician of colour: his reds, golds and blues seem to glow with their own light. Kings, popes and emperors all wanted him to paint their portraits.
