Five peasants gathered around a table under a hanging lamp, in a dark room painted in deep green tones

The Potato Eaters

Vincent van Gogh, 1885

What you see

Five people eat around a table in a dark room lit only by a hanging lamp. On the left, a man in a cap reaches with his fork toward a plate of potatoes, beside a woman in a bonnet. In the middle, a small figure seen from behind forms a silhouette. Further back, someone raises a cup, and on the right a woman pours from a kettle. The eye moves from the lamp to the hands.

Dark greens, browns and blacks dominate, with just a few points of light: the lamp, the bonnets and the tablecloth. The brushwork is loose and rough, and some details are more sensed than seen. Notice the clock and the small framed picture on the left wall.

About Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh began painting at 27 and in just ten years created about 900 paintings full of colour and swirling brushstrokes. He wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo, who always supported him. Hardly anyone bought his work while he lived; today his paintings are among the most loved in the world.
