Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear
Vincent van Gogh, 1889
What you see
Shown from the chest up and turned to the right, the painter looks serious. He wears a black fur cap with a blue crown and a buttoned green coat. A white bandage covers his ear and runs under his chin. Behind him are an easel, the print on the yellow wall and, on the right, the blue frame of a window or door.
The colors work through contrast: green coat against yellow wall, black cap against white bandage. The coat is built from short, parallel strokes, the face from patches of yellow, orange and green. Take a close look at the print, where you can make out a snowy mountain, figures in kimonos and a white bird.
About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh began painting at 27 and in just ten years created about 900 paintings full of colour and swirling brushstrokes. He wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo, who always supported him. Hardly anyone bought his work while he lived; today his paintings are among the most loved in the world.
