Café Terrace at Night
Vincent van Gogh, 1888
What you see
On the left, a café terrace glows beneath a large yellow awning, with round tables, seated customers and a waiter dressed in white. The cobbled street enters from the bottom and runs off between dark buildings with lit windows, where a few people stroll. Above opens a strip of starry sky. Every line leads the eye into the distance, where the street fades into shadow.
The painting plays the warm yellow of the terrace against the deep blue of the night. The stars look like small flowers, and the paving stones, made of curved strokes of lilac, green and orange, catch the café’s glow. Don’t miss the lantern hanging under the awning and the tower silhouetted far down the street.
About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh began painting at 27 and in just ten years created about 900 paintings full of colour and swirling brushstrokes. He wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo, who always supported him. Hardly anyone bought his work while he lived; today his paintings are among the most loved in the world.
