The Night Café
Vincent van Gogh, 1888
What you see
Viewed from above, the café has a plank floor that rises toward a counter with bottles and a curtained doorway. A billiard table sits in the middle, with a man in white standing beside it. At the side tables, a couple sits close together on the left, and a few customers slump forward on the right.
The dark red of the walls clashes with the green of the ceiling, the billiard table and the counter, while the yellow floor seems almost to glow. Around each lamp, yellow and orange strokes form circular halos. Look for the clock on the back wall, the vase of flowers on the counter and the signature “Vincent” at lower right.
About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh began painting at 27 and in just ten years created about 900 paintings full of colour and swirling brushstrokes. He wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo, who always supported him. Hardly anyone bought his work while he lived; today his paintings are among the most loved in the world.
