The Bedroom
Vincent van Gogh, 1889
What you see
The room is seen from one corner. On the right, a wooden bed with a red blanket fills almost half the room. Two straw chairs stand nearby and, at the back, a little table with a jug and basin sits beside the green window. Clothes, a mirror and several pictures hang on the walls, including two portraits. The sloping floor draws the eye toward the window.
The colors are flat and bright, with hardly any shadows: lavender blue on the walls, yellow and orange for the furniture, green and pink on the floor. The perspective is slightly skewed, so the back wall leans and the floor seems to rise. Notice the doors on either side and the colored boards of the floor.
About Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh began painting at 27 and in just ten years created about 900 paintings full of colour and swirling brushstrokes. He wrote hundreds of letters to his brother Theo, who always supported him. Hardly anyone bought his work while he lived; today his paintings are among the most loved in the world.
