Young Girl with a Parasol (Aline Nunès)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1883
What you see
A girl with long reddish hair stands full-length in a meadow, facing us. She wears a black feathered hat with a red flower, a dark green coat with lace cuffs, a ruffled white skirt, black stockings and boots. One hand rests a parasol on her shoulder, and the other holds a small bunch of wildflowers.
The dark green coat stands out against grass brushed in quick strokes of yellow and green. A bush of red flowers blazes on the left, and a patch of blue sky shows at the top. Look at the pink, see-through parasol, which lets the sky show through it, and at the signature in the lower left.
About Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Pierre-Auguste Renoir began by painting flowers on porcelain plates and became one of the great Impressionists. He loved to paint happiness: dances, outdoor meals, children and friends in light filtering through the trees. He kept painting into old age, even when he had to have the brush tied to his hand.
