Dance in the Country

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1883

What you see

A couple dances in a close embrace, filling almost the full height of this narrow canvas. He wears a dark blue suit, half turned away from us, his head bent toward her. She wears a red bonnet and yellow gloves, smiles at us over his shoulder and holds a fan aloft. On the right stands a table with a cloth and cups.

The near-black blue of the suit plays against the white dress scattered with tiny red flowers, its skirt swinging out with the movement. Green leaves crowd the top. Spot the straw hat dropped on the ground at lower right, and a man’s face peeking over the railing on the left.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir began by painting flowers on porcelain plates and became one of the great Impressionists. He loved to paint happiness: dances, outdoor meals, children and friends in light filtering through the trees. He kept painting into old age, even when he had to have the brush tied to his hand.
