Young woman in a dark blue dress and red hat with a little girl in a flowered hat on a terrace by a river

Two Sisters (On the Terrace)

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1881

What you see

A young woman in a dark blue dress and a red hat sits on a terrace with her hands folded. In front of her, on the right, a little girl in a white dress and a hat heaped with flowers looks our way. A basket of colorful yarn sits at lower left. Beyond the railing, through branches and leaves, a river opens up with boats and houses on the far bank.

The red hat and the blue dress are the strongest colors, steering the eye to the two faces. The background, by contrast, is brushed in light touches of green, white and lilac. Notice the small posy pinned to the young woman’s chest and the girl’s rosy cheeks.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir began by painting flowers on porcelain plates and became one of the great Impressionists. He loved to paint happiness: dances, outdoor meals, children and friends in light filtering through the trees. He kept painting into old age, even when he had to have the brush tied to his hand.
