Nini in the Garden
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1876
What you see
Nini sits on a chair just left of center, surrounded by shrubs and branches. She wears a dark hat, a black vest and a pale dress, with her hands in her lap. Behind her, through the leaves, a white house with a blue door and an orange roof peeks out. Below, a dirt path crosses the picture in the sun.
The paint is thick and very loose: greens, yellows and ochres blend with touches of blue and lilac, and the figure is almost lost among them. On the path the light turns pink and the shadows violet. Watch for the wooden leg of the chair on the left, and the signature at lower right.
About Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Pierre-Auguste Renoir began by painting flowers on porcelain plates and became one of the great Impressionists. He loved to paint happiness: dances, outdoor meals, children and friends in light filtering through the trees. He kept painting into old age, even when he had to have the brush tied to his hand.
