Luncheon of the Boating Party
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1880–1881
What you see
Under a red-and-white striped awning, more than a dozen people linger on a balcony after a meal. On the left, a man in a sleeveless shirt leans on the railing, and below him a young woman in a flowered hat plays with a small dog. On the right, another rower sits backward on a chair. The table in the middle ties everyone together.
Whites from tablecloths, shirts and dresses are scattered across the canvas among deep blues and reds. The table is a still life of grapes, bottles and gleaming glasses. Beyond the railing, through the leaves, the river shows white sails. Don’t miss the young woman drinking from a glass in the back, and the top hats of the men talking at upper right.
About Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Pierre-Auguste Renoir began by painting flowers on porcelain plates and became one of the great Impressionists. He loved to paint happiness: dances, outdoor meals, children and friends in light filtering through the trees. He kept painting into old age, even when he had to have the brush tied to his hand.
