Woman with long black hair, yellow blouse and pink sari glancing sideways, head tilted, holding a yellow fruit

Woman Holding a Fruit

Raja Ravi Varma

What you see

The woman is seen half-length, turned to the left, her head tilted and her eyes sliding sideways toward the viewer. One hand raises a yellow fruit; the other draws the edge of her pink sari up to her shoulder. Her loose black hair falls down her back and out of the frame.

Against a plain olive background, warm light falls on her face, yellow blouse and arms. The jewelry is painted in detail: an ornament at the top of the ear, a bell-shaped earring, a nose ring, necklaces of red beads and pearls, and green bangles trimmed with gold. Spot the faint smile and the red dot on her forehead.

About Raja Ravi Varma

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was born in Kilimanoor, in the kingdom of Travancore (now Kerala, in southern India), into an aristocratic family linked to the royal house. He joined European academic oil technique with Indian subjects: scenes from the epics the “Mahabharata” and “Ramayana,” goddesses and Indian women. In 1894 he opened a lithographic press in Bombay, and his oleographs of Hindu gods circulated so widely that they became the popular image of those figures.
