Young Man and Skull
Paul Cézanne, 1896–1898
What you see
A young man in a dark blue jacket sits on a wooden chair at the right, his elbow on the table and his head resting on his hand. He looks down to the left. On the far side of the table, a skull sits on a stack of books beside some white papers. Behind him falls a large curtain printed with leaves, filling the upper part of the picture.
Blues and violets dominate, with warm browns in the table and chair. The brushstrokes are visible, especially in the young man’s clothes. The pale yellowish skull is, along with the papers, the brightest spot. Notice the scalloped edge of the table and for his other hand resting on his leg.
About Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne lived mostly in Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France, and painted with endless patience: sometimes an apple took so long to paint that it rotted. He built his pictures with brushstrokes like small bricks of colour. Picasso called him “the father of us all”.
