Still Life with a Ginger Jar and Eggplants
Paul Cézanne, 1893–1894
What you see
On a table covered with a patterned blue cloth and a white one, several objects gather. At the center stands a pale jar wrapped in cane netting; behind it, a green pot and a wrapped bottle. On the left are a green melon and a lemon, and on the right, a plate of pears and other fruit. At upper right, three dark eggplants hang from wooden sticks.
Blues and greens dominate the picture, and the yellows and reds of the fruit leap out against them. The patterned cloth is painted with dark, curving strokes. Keep an eye out for the piece of wooden furniture at upper left and for the white vertical frame on the right.
About Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne lived mostly in Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France, and painted with endless patience: sometimes an apple took so long to paint that it rotted. He built his pictures with brushstrokes like small bricks of colour. Picasso called him “the father of us all”.
