Madame Cézanne with a Fan
Paul Cézanne, 1879–1888
What you see
Madame Cézanne sits in a red armchair that wraps around her from the left. She wears a gray-blue jacket with dark bows, a white collar and a black bodice at the center. One hand holds a dark fan, while the other rests on her skirt. Her dark hair, parted in the middle, frames an oval face that looks out at us.
The red of the chair dominates the left half and contrasts with the cool blues of the dress and of the wallpaper behind, whose pattern is barely visible. The strokes are parallel and diagonal, especially in the skirt. Watch for the violet bows on the sleeves and for the white cuff peeking out at one wrist.
About Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne lived mostly in Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France, and painted with endless patience: sometimes an apple took so long to paint that it rotted. He built his pictures with brushstrokes like small bricks of colour. Picasso called him “the father of us all”.
