Long-haired brown and white dog lying on a grassy slope; below, two white puppies, one with black patches

Mother Dog and Puppies

Kim Hong-do (Danwon)

What you see

The scene reads from top to bottom. High up, a four-column inscription floats in empty space. Lower down, on a grassy slope, the mother lies stretched out, with long brown fur, a white chest and her gaze to the front. At the bottom, two puppies put their heads together: a pale one curled up and a white one with black patches and its tail raised.

The silk’s golden-brown tone blends with the mother’s coat. Her fur is drawn in fine, soft strokes, fuller in the tail. Spot the small dark flowers among the grasses on the slope and the white blaze running down the dog’s forehead.

About Kim Hong-do (Danwon)

Kim Hong-do, known by his art name Danwon, grew up in Ansan and from the age of seven studied with the master Kang Se-hwang, who later recommended him to the royal painting bureau of the Joseon dynasty. He was a court painter under Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo, but he is remembered above all for his scenes of the daily life of farmers, craftsmen and ordinary people. He is perhaps the best-known painter in Korean art history; in 1788 King Jeongjo sent him to paint the Geumgang (Diamond) Mountains.
