Word of the day: guess the five-letter word

Word of the Day is a free game in your browser, with nothing to download: guess a five-letter word in six tries, in English or Spanish. After each guess, every letter tells you whether it’s in the right spot, somewhere else in the word or not in it at all.

The daily word is the same for everyone and changes at midnight, Mexico City time; in Practice there are as many as you like. There are 893 possible answers in English and 587 in Spanish, and more than 6,500 and more than 3,000 words are accepted as guesses.

The sheet comes out of a typewriter: each letter goes in with a keystroke and, when you enter the guess, gets stamped in ink. Each stamp is a note and the carriage bell rings at the end of the row. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • The daily word, the same for everyone, and unlimited Practice.
  • In English or Spanish, with statistics and a streak for each language.
  • Ink stamps: jade and square if it’s in the right spot, ochre and round if it’s elsewhere, no ink if it isn’t there.
  • The shape says it too, and there’s a high-contrast option in orange and blue.
  • Hard mode: the clues you already have must be used.
  • Share your result without giving away the word, eight achievements and your records in your profile.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Word of the Day and choose the language.
  2. Type a real five-letter word and enter it.
  3. Look at the stamps: jade, the letter goes there; ochre, it goes elsewhere; no ink, it isn’t in the word.
  4. Use those clues in your next guess; you have six to find it.

Tips for guessing in fewer tries

Start with a word that has different vowels and common consonants, like “crane,” “slate” or “audio.” Then, instead of repeating letters you know aren’t there, try new ones to rule out more at once. Remember that a word can have repeated letters.

In hard mode every guess has to use the letters you’ve already found, so it pays to think before you enter. Hard mode has to be chosen before your first guess, and your result shows a small mark when you share it. The answers come from a list of common words, so you won’t get anything too obscure.

Common questions

When does the daily word change?

At midnight, Mexico City time. It’s the same for everyone playing in that language.

Do accents count?

In Spanish, no: “árbol” is typed ARBOL. Ñ is a separate letter, and on phones it appears on the on-screen keyboard.

Can I play more than one a day?

Yes. There’s one daily word, but Practice has as many as you like, and they don’t affect your streak.
