Sudoku

Free online sudoku with a daily puzzle

Free sudoku in your browser, with nothing to download: fill the 9 × 9 grid so that every row, every column and every 3 × 3 box has the numbers 1 to 9 with no repeats. Tap a square and then a number.

There are four levels, Easy, Normal, Hard and Expert, graded by the technique you need to solve them, and every puzzle has a single solution. There’s also the daily sudoku, the same for everyone, which keeps track of your streak.

It’s played on a sheet of paper with blue ink. Every number plays a note of the scale and, when you complete a row, a column or a box, its melody plays. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • Four levels with a single solution, graded by technique.
  • The daily sudoku (Normal level), the same for everyone, with streaks.
  • Pencil notes that erase themselves when you place a number.
  • Hints that explain why: “it can only be a 7.”
  • Undo, erase and, if you want, showing mistakes right away.
  • Best time per level; the clock pauses when the window is hidden, and your unfinished sudoku waits for you.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Sudoku and choose a level or the daily one.
  2. Tap an empty square and then the number that goes there.
  3. Use “Notes” to jot down the possible numbers in small print.
  4. You’re done when the grid is full with no number repeated in any row, column or box.

The four levels

On Easy and Normal it’s enough to find the square where only one number fits, or the only place in a row, column or box where a number can go; Easy starts with more numbers filled in. Hard needs techniques like pointing pairs and box-line reduction, and Expert needs naked and hidden pairs and triples, or more.

If you don’t know how to go on, Hint doesn’t just place a number: it tells you why it goes there, so you learn the technique.

How to start a sudoku

Look first for the number that appears most in the grid and check box by box where it’s still missing: often there’s only one place left. Then look at the rows and columns that are nearly full. When you can’t see anything certain, jot notes in the squares of a box or a row and look for one with a single possible number. Don’t guess: a well-made sudoku can always be solved by thinking.

Common questions

Does every sudoku have a solution?

Yes, and only one. Each puzzle is generated and checked so there’s just one way to fill it in.

What is the daily sudoku?

A Normal-level sudoku that’s the same for everyone and changes at midnight, Mexico City time. Solve it several days in a row and your streak grows.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. It works in your phone, tablet or computer browser with nothing to install; on a computer you can also play with the keyboard.
