Melody Echo

Melody Echo: free online musical memory game

Melody Echo is a free musical memory game, in your browser with nothing to download. The game plays the first note of a song and you play it back; each round adds the next note, until you play the whole phrase from memory and the song plays in full, with bass and chords.

It comes with 19 public-domain or traditional melodies, from Twinkle, Twinkle and Las mañanitas to the Turkish March, in three difficulty levels: 7 easy, 9 medium and 3 hard. You play on the on-screen piano, with big color buttons, with your computer keyboard or with a MIDI keyboard, and on arcadopolis.com there are online duels against another person.

It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

Free, no ads, nothing to install.

What it has

  • Four modes: Practice (no lives, slower and with note names), Classic (three lives), Strict (one mistake and it’s over) and By ear (the keys don’t light up).
  • Main phrase or whole song, and speed from 50% to 120%.
  • An on-screen piano that fits each song, or up to 12 color buttons with shapes for younger players.
  • Computer keyboard (A, S, D, F… and W, E, R… for the black keys), MIDI keyboard or game controller.
  • “Any octave” accepts the right note in any octave, handy with small keyboards.
  • Every song keeps your stars and your best round, and the songs you learn can be downloaded as MIDI or audio.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder and tap Melody Echo.
  2. Pick a song, the mode and the length; “Listen” plays the phrase before you start.
  3. Tap “Start”, listen to the note and play it back. Each round adds one more note.
  4. Finish the phrase from memory and hear the whole song, with your stars.

How stars work

A song learned with no mistakes and no repeats earns three stars. Each mistake counts as one and each repeat as half: up to two and you get two stars; more than that, one. In Practice a song is always learned with one star, because repeats are free there and mistakes don’t cost lives; it’s the mode for learning, while Classic, Strict and By ear are for earning all three. Press Space (or the “Repeat” button) to hear the round again.

The songs

The easy ones include Twinkle, Twinkle, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Are You Sleeping?, Ode to Joy and Jingle Bells; the medium ones, Pachelbel’s Canon in D, Las mañanitas, La cucaracha, Greensleeves and the Minuet in G; and the hard ones are Für Elise, the Turkish March and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Each comes with a fun fact, like how Für Elise was published forty years after Beethoven’s death and nobody knows for sure who Elise was.

Common questions

Do I need to know music?

No. In Practice you see each note’s name, the right key lights up if you miss and there are no lives to lose. With the color buttons you don’t even need to know the piano: every note has its own color and shape.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. On small screens the game starts with the color buttons, which you tap with your finger, and if you choose the piano with “Any octave” on, the keyboard folds into an octave and a half so the keys aren’t tiny.

How does the online duel work?

On arcadopolis.com, with a free account, you take turns with another person playing back the same melody, one more note each time; whoever misses or runs out of time loses. If nobody shows up soon, you play against the computer.
