Sing the Melody

Sing the Melody: a free singing pitch game

Sing the Melody is a free game for singing in tune, in your browser with nothing to download. You hear a melody, sing it (or hum it) into the microphone and the game tells you how in tune you were, note by note.

There are 10 public-domain melodies, from Twinkle, Twinkle and Frère Jacques to Ode to Joy and Greensleeves. The notes move across a staff and a line draws your voice live; the octave doesn’t matter, so everyone sings in their own range. Your voice is analyzed on your own device and is never recorded or sent. Without a microphone, you play with the keyboard.

It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

Free, no ads, nothing to install.

What it has

  • 10 public-domain melodies, from easiest to hardest.
  • Your voice live over the staff, with the note that’s playing at each moment.
  • A grade for every note: green if it was in tune, yellow if close and red if not.
  • Up to three stars per song (60, 75 and 90%) and your best percentage saved.
  • No microphone: the keys A to L or the on-screen piano, graded the same way.
  • Private: your voice is analyzed on your device and never recorded.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder and tap Sing the Melody.
  2. Pick a song and tap Listen to hear it.
  3. Tap Sing and allow the microphone. Four beats count you in and the notes start moving: sing each one as it crosses the line.
  4. When it ends you see every note in green, yellow or red, your percentage and your stars.

How grading works

The game listens to your voice dozens of times a second and works out which note you’re singing. While each note passes, it counts how long you were within 60 cents of it (a little over half a semitone), not counting the start, and that gives its percentage. The song’s is the average of all of them. Since the octave doesn’t matter, you can sing low or high, whatever feels comfortable.

Tips for singing in tune

Listen to the melody before singing and hum it quietly. Use headphones if you can, so the microphone doesn’t hear the music, and sing close to the microphone somewhere quiet. Hold each note until the next one arrives, instead of letting it go at the start. Begin with Twinkle, Twinkle and Au clair de la lune, which have long notes and small steps.

Common questions

Is my voice recorded?

No. The microphone sound is analyzed on your device while you sing and thrown away immediately. It isn’t recorded, saved or sent anywhere; the microphone turns off when the song ends.

What if I don’t have a microphone?

Tap With the keyboard: the keys A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K and L (or the on-screen piano) play the notes, and it’s graded the same way, by how long you hold the right note.

Do I have to sing in the same key?

No. The game compares notes regardless of octave, so a low voice, a high voice or a child’s voice all count the same.
