Conquián

Free online Conquián, the Mexican rummy

Free Conquián in your browser, with nothing to download: the classic Mexican rummy, played with the 40-card Spanish deck. You get 8 cards and the first to meld 9 wins: all of theirs plus one more. You play against the computer, on Easy, Normal or Hard.

What makes it different from other card games: a card never goes into your hand. The card you turn up from the deck, or the one your rival discards, must be used right away to meld (three or four of the same number, or three or more in a row of the same suit), and then you discard one. If nobody wants it, it goes to the discard pile.

The deck is our own design: Coins, Cups, Swords and Clubs, from 1 to 7 plus Jack, Knight and King. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • A 40-card Spanish deck, drawn for Arcadópolis.
  • Traditional rules: 8 cards, go out with 9, sets and suit runs, the 7 followed by the Jack.
  • Against the computer on three levels; on Hard it watches your melds so it won’t feed you cards, and it remembers what’s gone.
  • A hint button that marks which cards in your hand go with the card in the middle.
  • If the deck runs out and nobody goes out, it’s a draw.
  • An unfinished game is saved; six achievements and records in your profile.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Conquián and choose the level.
  2. On your turn, turn up the top card of the deck.
  3. If it helps, tap the cards in your hand that go with it (or one of your melds on the table) and “Meld”; then choose a card to discard. If it doesn’t, “Pass”.
  4. The card you discard is offered to the computer. The first to meld all 9 cards wins.

The melds you can make

Sets: three or four cards of the same number, in different suits, like three Kings or four 5s. Runs: three or more cards in a row of the same suit, like the 4, 5 and 6 of Cups. The Spanish deck has no 8s or 9s, so the order is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Jack, Knight and King: the 6, 7 and Jack of Coins are also a run. You can add cards to your melds on the table: a fourth King, or the 3 of Cups before the 4.

Tips for going out first

Keep cards that help each other: pairs of the same number and nearby cards of the same suit. Discard the loners first, but check the computer’s melds before you discard: if your card fits one of them, it will use it. Keep track of what’s gone to the discard pile; if two Kings are already out, holding the third is not worth much. And don’t rush to meld: sometimes it’s better to pass a card than to break up a good pair.

Common questions

What is Conquián?

It’s a card game from the rummy family, very popular in Mexico, played with the 40-card Spanish deck. Each player gets 8 cards and the first to meld 9 wins.

Why can’t I keep the card?

In Conquián a card never goes into your hand: the card you turn up or that’s discarded to you can only be taken if you use it right away to meld. That makes every card a quick decision.

What happens if the deck runs out?

If the last card is turned up and nobody manages to go out, the game ends in a draw: nobody wins.
