The Syndics of the Drapers’ Guild
Rembrandt, 1662
What you see
Six men in black with white collars gather behind a table draped in a red cloth. Five wear broad-brimmed hats; the sixth, bareheaded, stands at the back between them. The man in the middle rests his hand on an open book, while the second from the left is caught halfway between sitting and rising from his chair. On the right, another holds something small in his hands.
The tablecloth, a red that dims toward the right, is the strongest patch of color; the rest is black, white and the wood of the walls. Light enters from the left and models each face. Spot the carved chair in the left foreground.
About Rembrandt
Rembrandt van Rijn was the great master of light and shadow of the Dutch Golden Age, in Amsterdam. He painted faces so expressive that they seem to think and feel. He made about 80 self-portraits, like a diary of his whole life.
