Old Man with a Gold Chain
Rembrandt, c. 1631
What you see
An old man with a mustache and short beard poses from the waist up, his body facing us and his head turned to the right. He wears a black beret topped with dark plumes, a piece of armor at the throat and a black cloak that covers him completely. A gold chain with a medallion crosses his chest on a diagonal, and one elbow juts out to the left, as if his hand rests on his hip.
Light arrives from the left, touching his forehead, his nose and the metal sheen at his neck; the rest sinks into velvety blacks. The plain, grayish-brown background gives the figure room to breathe. Seek out the small earring in his ear and the tiny letters painted at lower left.
About Rembrandt
Rembrandt van Rijn was the great master of light and shadow of the Dutch Golden Age, in Amsterdam. He painted faces so expressive that they seem to think and feel. He made about 80 self-portraits, like a diary of his whole life.
