What you see
Four figures gather in an interior. At the center, a young woman in a brocade gown and a tall headdress sings from a book open on her lap, one hand raised. On the left, a man in a turban draws a bow across a large viol; behind him, a youth in a plumed hat plucks a harp. On the right, an old woman in a headscarf listens, hand to her chin.
Colors vary: pinks and golds in the gown, turquoise on the tablecloth, a grayish blue in the curtain. Light enters from the left and makes the fabrics shine. Notice the painting on the wall at upper left, the lute on the floor and the pile of books in the foreground, one with a dangling seal.
About Rembrandt
Rembrandt van Rijn was the great master of light and shadow of the Dutch Golden Age, in Amsterdam. He painted faces so expressive that they seem to think and feel. He made about 80 self-portraits, like a diary of his whole life.
