Man seated in an open hut beneath pines, with mountains and a waterfall behind and a boy on the path

High Mountains and Flowing Water

Qiu Ying

What you see

Steep mountains fill the upper half, with a sharp peak at the center and a waterfall dropping between the rocks. Below, a screen of twisting pines spreads across the scene. At lower left, in an open hut, a man in a pale robe sits on a mat beside stacked books, while outside a boy walks along the path.

Ochre silk and greyish greens dominate, with touches of blue on the rocks. The pine crowns are dark blots of ink. Don’t miss the long dark object beside the man, which could be his zither, and the figure peering out from the side room of the hut.
