Officers of the St Adrian Civic Guard
Frans Hals, 1633
What you see
More than a dozen officers gather outdoors, spread across the whole canvas. On the left are those holding flags and pikes; in the center, a man with a hat and a blue sash turns his back to us, and on the right several sit or lean around a table with an open book.
The white collars and the orange, blue and white sashes stand out against the black suits and the dark foliage. At upper right, a red roof and a patch of sky show through the trees. Look for the metal points of the halberds, the cane held by the officer in the left foreground and the gold sash of the man standing by the table.
About Frans Hals
Frans Hals lived in Haarlem and was the great portrait painter of joy: his sitters smile, laugh and seem about to speak. He painted with quick, loose brushstrokes, very modern for his time. Van Gogh and Manet admired his way of painting.
